How to Host and Share Images on Discord, Reddit, and Forums
Sharing images on Discord, Reddit, and forums is one of the most common reasons people use image hosting services. Each platform has its own quirks when it comes to displaying images, and knowing the right link format saves time and frustration.
Discord
Discord automatically embeds images when you paste a direct image URL into a chat message. For this to work, the link must end in an image extension like .jpg, .png, .gif, or .webp. Pasting a page URL (like an Imgur gallery link) will sometimes embed and sometimes not, depending on how the site handles metadata.
On IMGBS, every uploaded image has a direct link that ends in the file extension. Just copy the direct URL and paste it into Discord — it will embed instantly as a full-size image in the chat. GIFs also animate automatically.
Reddit supports image links in posts and comments. In comments, you can use Markdown format to embed an image link. The Markdown format is:
[Image description](https://imgbs.com/uploads/your-image.jpg)
For posts, you can paste a direct image URL when creating a link post, and Reddit will display it as a thumbnail or embedded image depending on the subreddit settings.
IMGBS provides ready-to-copy Markdown code on every image page. Just click the Markdown option in the share codes section and paste it into your Reddit comment or post.
Forums (BBCode)
Many traditional forums like phpBB, vBulletin, XenForo, and others use BBCode for formatting. To embed an image in a forum post, you need the BBCode format:
[img]https://imgbs.com/uploads/your-image.jpg[/img]
IMGBS automatically generates this BBCode for every upload. On the image page, look for the BBCode option in the share section and copy it directly into your forum post.
HTML embed
If you run a website or blog and want to embed a hosted image, you can use the HTML embed code:
<img src="https://imgbs.com/uploads/your-image.jpg" alt="Description">
IMGBS provides this ready to copy as well, including proper alt text based on your image title for better accessibility and SEO.
Tips for sharing images effectively
Use descriptive titles when uploading. Instead of "IMG_4382.jpg," name it something meaningful like "sunset-over-lake-michigan." This helps you find images later and makes links look more professional when shared. Good titles also help your images appear in search results, which can drive traffic back to your content.
For screenshots, crop to the relevant area before uploading. Nobody wants to see your entire desktop when you are trying to show a specific error message or UI element.
For GIFs, keep file sizes reasonable. IMGBS supports large files, but a 50MB GIF will load slowly for everyone viewing it. Try to keep GIFs under 10MB for the best experience.
